The construction of a new sub-station for the development of the Western Maintenance Area.

Critical activity in Manchester Airport’s plans for the development of the Western Maintenance Area, the work involved the construction of a new sub-station building adjacent to a previously constructed temporary sub-station. This required detailed transfer arrangements that were necessary to ensure that Electricity North West was able to divert key services from the temporary to the permanent sub-station to a precise programme. Given the circumstances, it was a crucial factor for this project to be delivered on time.

Problem-solving was a driving force throughout

The project faced several challenges that needed to be overcome in order to successfully complete the build. With the first wave Covid-19 up against us and the government issuing a full lock-down halfway through the work, our team had to navigate through the issues. Meticulous planning and management were required throughout in order to minimise any risk to site personnel in accordance with all government guidance and still meet critical programme requirements.

Further challenges were presented by the unavoidable presence of the live substation and its related high voltage services. Strict control measures were enforced to manage the risk associated with these exposed and potentially vulnerable services.

Building the right team for the job

The project required the use of multiple specialist sub-contractors and suppliers from steelwork fabrication and installation to the provision of louvred doors and CCTV. Due to our long history of building relationships with key sub-contractors, we drafted in the right people for the job and maintained full management of them ensuring a high-quality build, programme compliance and a safe site.

The result

Despite the challenges, our dedicated team members successfully completed the construction safely and within the critical deadline.
